Course overview:
The BSS course is strongly recommended for all trainees who are about to embark on their first surgical position. It is delivered over two days, through a series of hands-on sessions. It focuses on a range of core surgical skills and techniques and gives participants the opportunity to learn to use a range of surgical instruments and to handle tissue with increased confidence.
Course format
A practical, workshop-led course. Each skill is introduced with a step-by-step video, before participants practice the technique individually or in pairs
Learning outcomes
– Identify and practice safe operating techniques, including gowning and gloving
– Recognize the characteristics of surgical instruments and sharps, and handle them safely
– Identify and use the correct techniques for laying safe surgical knots
– Identify and use correct, safe suturing techniques
– Describe the principles of handling tissues and recognize differing requirements for differing sites
– Explain and practice safe local anesthetic techniques
Assess and implement the primary surgical management of infected and contaminated soft tissues
– Explain the principles behind the practical and safe use of electrosurgery devices
– Manipulate endoscopic instruments safely and with appropriate visuospatial awareness
